Hymns

As we begin, we believe it is important to indicate
what we are aiming to do,
And what the finished product will look like.
  1. We want to gather and catalog all of the great German Lutheran hymn texts, we desire texts in the best possible version and complete bibliography regarding the authorship and publication.
  2. We want to gather and catalog all of the great German Lutheran hymn tunes, we desire good harmonization, complete bibliography regarding the authorship and publication.
  3. We want a good system to catalog and cross reference all the materials, as well as a search engine that will allow for title, tune, author, composer, meter, date and any other categories which may be desirable.
  4. So while we are building we are offering this sample page, and ask for feedback so the project can develop in the most beneficial manner.
While the work is in progress,
we are offering 5 static index pages
  • Titles = German hymn titles in alphabetical order (with lyrics and midi)
     currently (1/24/05) about 950 texts indexed & 210 midi are available
  • Authors = German hymn arranged by author - revised (8/30/05)complete hymns of Paul Gerhardt
  • Tunes = German hymn tunes in alphabetical order
  • Composers = German hymn tunes arranged by composer
  • Zahn = German hymn tunes arranged by Zahn #'s with midi
     about 240 midi are available (10/30/03) , this is the place where they are first indexed
  • Winkworth = German hymn texts & Catherine Winkworth translations - revised (3/18/03)
  • Borthwick = German hymn texts & Borthwick-Findlater translations - revised (5/9/03)
  • Gerhardt = German hymn texts of Paul Gerhardt - revised (8/30/05)
These are very much works under construction
(Some indexes are not yet available, and those wishing
the latest word should know that the Titles index will be regarded as primary)
there will be additions and corrections as things grow
In time we hope that all these indexes will be able to provide
German and English hymns texts and midi files of appropriate tunes.
It may be possible, in time, to also offer sheet music.
